Why “Cereal City?”

Cereal City Review derives its name from Battle Creek, Michigan—the city we call home. Known as "Cereal City," Battle Creek earned this title by becoming the epicenter of the American cereal industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This association began with Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and his brother, W.K. Kellogg, who invented corn flakes and established the Kellogg Company here. Their innovation attracted other cereal companies, including the Postum Cereal Company (now Post Consumer Brands), solidifying Battle Creek's reputation as the heart of the cereal industry.

Over the years, Battle Creek residents have taken immense pride in their Cereal City heritage, which has deeply influenced the city's economy, culture, and community spirit. This cereal-centric identity is not just a historical footnote but a living, breathing part of Battle Creek's present. We believe that, just as Battle Creek is shaped by its cereal legacy, all people are profoundly influenced by the places they live, with their identities deeply intertwined with their surroundings.

Our Mission

With that in mind, we seek writing that embodies a strong sense of place. We want writing where the place is so integral that the narrative wouldn't be the same without it. We are looking for stories where conflicts and characters are inseparable from their environments, and poetry that conjures vivid, postcard-like images of distinct locales. We believe that place shapes identity, and we aim to highlight writing that brings these connections to life in compelling and evocative ways.
